Automatic opening vent systems are installed in buildings as
an active fire protection measure. Opening vents allows smoke to dissipate out
of a building providing a minor benefit to increase the visibility in the
interior space to facilitate evacuation and aid manual firefighting efforts for
a limited period of time. Most vents open via the operation of an electronic
actuator, commanded from control gear that is interlinked with a fire alarm
system. It is recommended that AOV systems are maintained on a six-monthly basis in order to ensure
correct operation of vents upon activation of the fire alarm system.
